2 San José Cops Arrested for Drug Evidence Tampering, False Reports
Two San José police officers were arrested by their own department and charged with felonies for allegedly covering up mishandled drug evidence. Officer Raydarius Surry failed to book a small bag of suspected narcotics listed in a May 3 arrest report, then allegedly replaced it from an Aug. 12 street stop without documenting the seizure. Officer Destiney Thompson, who is in a relationship with Surry, is accused of helping plan the cover-up by viewing body-worn camera footage. Both surrendered late Wednesday night, were placed on leave, and the case was referred for possible decertification review; Police Chief Paul Joseph said the allegations, if true, violate the trust the community expects.
